South African agriculture has never been particularly forgiving. Whether it is a maize farmer on the Highveld trying to make the most of a planting window or a wheat producer racing to finish harvest before the weather turns, there is rarely a convenient time for machinery to stand still. The time spent waiting for equipment to be repaired can have repercussions across the entire farming operation.

That is why farmers have traditionally judged machinery brands on more than horsepower figures and specifications. For many farmers, confidence in a brand is built over time. They remember the tractor that kept working when it was needed most, but they also remember the dealer who answered the phone and the mechanic who could always “maak ‘n plan” when time was running short. After all, reputations are earned in the field, not in the showroom.

Those are the same qualities Smith Power Equipment believes will determine the future of Deutz-Fahr in South Africa.

While the German brand, now part of the Italian-owned SDF Group, has been present in South Africa for many years, both companies recognise that long-term success in the local market depends on more than the machine itself.

At NAMPO 2026, Smith Power Equipment officially launched the full Deutz-Fahr range, spanning everything from the compact 3045E through to the range-topping 9340 TTV (a groot stuk trekker that was hard to miss and even harder to walk past without stopping for a closer look). While the flagship model attracted plenty of attention, Smith Power Equipment also used the opportunity to showcase more accessible tractors within the range, including models priced below R1 million, reflecting the realities of a market where every investment must deliver value.

The launch also reflected the significance of the partnership between the two companies, with SDF Chairman and CEO Lodovico Bussolati and other members of the group’s senior leadership team in attendance.

For Smith Power Equipment, however, the event was as much about the support behind the brand as it was about the tractors themselves. “Our primary focus has been on strengthening parts availability, after-sales support and dealer network coverage nationally. We know that backup and support are what keep farmers going, not just the tractor itself,” says David Kelder, CEO of Smith Power Equipment.

“Since the takeover of the full range of Deutz-Fahr in South Africa, significant effort has gone into improving stockholding, technical support and ensuring farmers have access to a dedicated nationwide dealer network, backed by our existing infrastructure and experience in the agricultural sector. We’re committed to rebuilding confidence in the brand and supporting Deutz-Fahr owners for the long term,” he says. That commitment is shared by SDF.
“I believe that, through our cooperation with the Smith Group and the fantastic team led by David, we have finally found the right partner to make Deutz-Fahr strong in this country for the long term,” says Bussolati.

“Stability and a long-term strategy are among the most important factors in earning the trust of farmers,” he adds.

Lodovico Bussolati, Chief Executive Officer of SDF Group, alongside Alessandro Maritano, Chief Commercial Officer of SDF, addresses the media at the Smith Power Equipment stand during NAMPO Bothaville, held from 12 to 15 May 2026. Deutz-Fahr recently unveiled its full tractor range, with Smith Power Equipment now serving as the sole distributor of the brand in South Africa.

SDF Commercial Director Alessandro Maritano reinforced that message during the launch, describing South Africa as a key market for the brand’s future growth and stating: “Deutz-Fahr is back on track in South Africa. We are not here to see what happens. We are here to stay. We are here to grow.”

With Smith Power Equipment now the sole distributor of Deutz-Fahr in South Africa, the brand’s distinctive green tractors are set to become an increasingly familiar sight in fields across the country.
