Lamb Champs was established in 2020. After the great success of the very first Lamb Champs, Saai, decided that the next one should be even better and bigger. This year, more than 5 000 people tasted some of the 100 lamb spits that were entered into the competition determine which lamb meat is the tastiest in South Africa.

Lamb Champs 2023 attracts many to feast on the best lamb meat in the country

Saai hosted Lamb Champs 2023 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on July 29, 2023. During the event, family farmers from all over South Africa had the opportunity to put the best lamb meat in South Africa on a spit and compete for the chance to be crowned the winner of Lamb Champs 2023 and take home the prize money of R50 000.

It was a fantastic gathering, and thousands of people from near and far attended to the event to show their support for the initiative of a hundred farmers who put their lambs up for the challenge to walk away with the title of the tastiest lamb meat in the country.

Case IH’s involvement in the Lamb Champs 2023 event

Case IH was one of the event’s biggest sponsors, and their slogan, “met Case ja, met Case” was a catchphrase on everyone’s lips.

“We are here today attending Lamb Champs 2023 as one of the proud main sponsors of the event. The reason why we are here and involved in the day is, of course, to spend nice time with our families and also with those of our farmers and the community,” says Stephan Nel, managing director of Case IH.

Stephan adds that they could not wait to taste the many sheep that were roasted on the spits that day.

Lamb Champs 2023 winners

The winner of the Lamb Champs 2023 was Paul van Rooyen, who comes from the Free State. He walked away with the cash prize of R50 000 as well as a bronze trophy by the sculptor Nic van Rensburg Artist Gallery, which was additionally valued at R80 000.

Both Basie van Wyk from Limpopo and Leon Struwig from Mpumalanga finished in second and third place, respectively.

The Meatmaster lamb took first place in the competition, while the Dormer and SAVM came in second and third, respectively.

Famous singers provided enough entertainment in between the tasting, savouring, and socialising.
