For many years, the Combined Truck and Equipment Group (CTEG) has been a well-known and trusted name in the mining and construction industries through its Shantui earthmoving equipment and Powerstar trucks.

However, the established brand has now firmly set its sights on the agricultural sector. To demonstrate firsthand what they have to offer farmers, the team recently attended the popular Val Boeredag.

Shantui

CTEG is the official distributor of Shantui earthmoving equipment in South Africa.

These reliable, high-performance machines are specifically built to withstand the demanding conditions of the local construction, mining, earthmoving and agricultural industries. Shantui supplies durable and cost-effective equipment ranging from wheel loaders and graders to rollers and much more.

Dylan Swart, Sales Manager at Shantui, explains that they bring an exceptionally broad range of machinery to the market. He says Shantui was introduced to the South African market in 2012, but at the time the focus was mainly on single product lines.

Over the years, however, CTEG expanded its product offering to meet the growing needs of its customers. Today, Shantui offers a diverse product range capable of meeting almost any requirement in the heavy equipment industry.

The demand for quality agricultural machinery has increased significantly over the past few years. Dylan points out that machines such as the L36 wheel loader and smaller bulldozers have become particularly popular for everyday operations on feedlots and in vineyards.

“We’re receiving more and more enquiries from farmers, and ultimately that’s our goal: not to focus on just one industry, but to provide versatile products across multiple sectors,” says Dylan.

When it comes to spare parts availability, Shantui machines have a major advantage in their engines. They are powered by Weichai engines, and because Shantui uses them across its entire product range, sourcing parts is fast and hassle-free.

CTEG also has dedicated 24-hour service teams ready to respond whenever problems arise. With their own fully staffed workshops and extensive warehouses, they ensure that the necessary components are always readily available.

“I think that’s what gives us an edge over the competition; we don’t rely on outside agents to support our customers – our own people handle everything,” Dylan adds.

Powerstar

Another product range proudly powered by the renowned Chinese Weichai engines is the Powerstar truck range. Marc Mynhardt, Branch Manager at Powerstar Centurion, explains they are the largest Powerstar dealer in South Africa.

Like the earthmoving equipment division, they initially supplied trucks mainly to the mining and construction sectors but have recently expanded successfully into agriculture.

Powerstar trucks are available in three core ranges. The VX series is designed for demanding construction and mining applications and includes tipper trucks, water tankers and refuse compactors.

The versatile FT series is ideal for medium-duty applications such as diesel tankers, flatbeds, and smaller tippers. Finally, the V3 long-haul range focuses on maximum safety and driver comfort.

They can supply trucks from 14 tonnes upwards and work closely with customers to build vehicles that perfectly suit their individual requirements. Marc notes that they can even fit custom-built cattle rails and other specialised accessories to the trucks.

Engine outputs range from 280 hp to 460 hp, all backed by proven Weichai technology. Powerstar trucks are purpose-built for challenging African conditions and operate without complicated electronic control units, making them much easier and more economical to maintain or repair in the field.

There are currently more than 20 accredited Powerstar dealerships across South Africa.

Marc explains: “Customers can come to us with confidence, and we’ll help them choose the right truck. We build the chassis ourselves in Pietermaritzburg. The farmer simply tells us what type of body or configuration they need, and we build it exactly to those specifications.”

They also provide excellent spare parts support and assist customers in arranging financing through all the major banks.

Weichai

Of course, these reliable and economical vehicles would not be possible without the outstanding Weichai engines – the power behind it all.

CTEG has been the official distributor of Weichai for many years, a brand that has already established a strong reputation in the South African market.

Heinrich Venter, Parts Manager at CTEG, explains that they now also distribute an official range of Weichai lubricants.

“We’ve been working with Weichai engines since 2006. It’s an incredibly reliable product and one of the fastest-growing engine manufacturers in the world. You’ll find their engines in everything – from everyday vehicles to our large earthmoving machines, trucks and even water pumps,” Heinrich explains.

For the past two years, they have also been importing specialised Weichai engine oil into South Africa. Heinrich says the oil is not only more cost-effective than many competing products on the market, but it also carries the same high-quality standards as the engines themselves.

“The oil is fully compatible with all machines requiring a 15W40 CI-4 oil specification. Its lubrication performance is excellent, particularly under extreme hot and cold conditions. We also maintain an ample stock of both oils and spare parts at all times.”

On top of that, Weichai engines are inexpensive to maintain and repair, they consistently deliver reliable service hours, and ultimately, they put real value back into the farmer’s pocket,” says Heinrich.
