While you’re travelling to Vivo, it quickly becomes clear that farming is taken seriously in this part of the country. The area is a mix of potato fields, pastures, and livestock farming. It’s a place where a reliable tractor can make the difference between a good and an average season.
So, it was fitting that AGCO and Massey Ferguson had a major presence at this year’s Vivo Farmers’ Marketing Day, with red tractors creating a sense of trust and familiarity from afar.
Bianca Henning, editor of ProAgri, attended the event and spoke with two of the region’s most experienced Massey partners: Jay-Dee Venter from TTS Massey Ferguson Pietersburg and George Fogwell from Tractor Field Services (TFS) Massey Ferguson Louis Trichardt. Both emphasised that Massey Ferguson’s presence at these events goes far beyond marketing.
It’s about building relationships, sharing knowledge, and supporting the local farming community.
The Massey Ferguson Global series: Workhorses that perform
One of the major attractions was the Massey Ferguson Global Series, especially the 4708 and 5710 models. Jay-Dee Venter explained that these tractors were designed with simplicity, reliability, and cost-effectiveness in mind. They are ideal for South African farmers who need strong, easy-to-service machines.
The MF 4708 is equipped with a 3,3 ℓ, three-cylinder AGCO Power turbo engine delivering around 60 kW. Farmers appreciate its low fuel consumption and good torque at low engine speeds, making it perfect for tasks such as plowing, spraying, and feeding.
Transmission options include an 8×8 mechanical shuttle or a 12×12 power shuttle, with a wet clutch in the power shuttle version that ensures smoother gear changes and longer durability.
The MF 5710, featuring a 4,4 ℓ, four-cylinder AGCO Power engine delivering up to 77 kW, offers more muscle for larger implements or higher production demands. It comes with a 12×12 synchronised gearbox, with the option of a power shuttle, and boasts an impressive lift capacity of up to 4 300 kg.
Jay-Dee pointed out that these tractors are specifically designed for easy maintenance:
“Everything is accessible – from the engine’s service points to the hydraulic systems. That means less downtime and lower operating costs.”

George Fogwell of Tractor Field Services (TFS) in Louis Trichardt and Jay-Dee Venter of TTS in Pietersburg welcomed farmers to the AGCO stand and shared more about these exceptional, well-known, and reliable tractors.
The high-power range – The 8738 S Limited Edition 175
While the tractors in the Global Series are the workhorses, the Massey Ferguson 8738 S Limited Edition 175 is the flagship model. George Fogwell from TFS was clearly proud when he introduced this model to the farmers.
This tractor comes from the renowned MF 8700 S-series, featuring an 8,4 ℓ, six-cylinder AGCO Power engine delivering up to 270 kW. The Dyna-VT CVT transmission provides stepless speed control, ideal for large grain and livestock operations requiring maximum productivity. The model showcased at Vivo turned heads with its impressive specifications – from nearly 12 tonnes of rear lift capacity to its electro-hydraulic PTO and wet clutches that perform smoothly – even under heavy loads.
George explained that the armrest control system in the cab is one of this series’ major advantages:
“The operator has all the key controls right at their fingertips – from hydraulic valves and PTO selections to speed control. This reduces fatigue and allows the tractor’s full potential to be used.”
The cab’s ergonomics and comfort are a major bonus. With low noise levels, excellent visibility, and intuitive controls, a driver can work for hours without unnecessary strain.
More than just technology – it’s about trust
Although technical specs are important, both Jay-Dee and George stress that it’s the relationship between Massey, their dealers, and the farmers that truly matters.
“We’re not just here to sell tractors,” says Jay-Dee. “We want to offer solutions tailored to the farmer’s unique situation. It’s important to us that when a farmer buys a Massey, he also gains the security of a partner who will support him.”
George agrees: “When your tractor stops, your harvest stops. We believe in fast service and parts availability. That’s what builds trust – not just the quality of the tractor, but the peace of mind knowing you’re not alone when you face a problem.”

AGCO made a strong impression at the Vivo Farmers’ Marketing Day with a massive display of all their products, including well-known names like Massey Ferguson and Fendt.
A brand that serves the community
The Vivo Farmers’ Marketing Day is not just an exhibition, but a social event where farmers exchange ideas and discover new solutions. Massey Ferguson’s presence brought a sense of partnership and involvement.
AGCO’s involvement goes beyond just products. They offer financing options, maintenance packages, and training to ensure farmers get the most out of their investment. It’s this holistic approach that reinforces Massey Ferguson’s popularity in the region.
The road ahead
The day’s success shows that Massey Ferguson is not simply a brand – it’s an institution in the farming community. With reliable tractors, advanced technology, and dealers who know and support their farmers, the road ahead looks promising.
For farmers in and around Vivo, the message is clear: whether you need a rugged workhorse for daily tasks or a high-powered solution for large-scale production, Massey Ferguson has a model to meet your needs – and people ready to support you.
