The Arlington Farmers’ Day, held on 23 July 2025, proved that not even wet weather can dampen a farmer’s interest in technology. With 25 mm of rain the night before, the event had to be shifted to a drier section of the farm. Visitors could still see the tractors in action, while representatives shared valuable insights into the technology behind each model.

From the AGCO stable, four impressive tractors were on display: the Fendt 728 Vario Gen7, Fendt 1162 Vario MT, Massey Ferguson MF 8732 S, MF 8S.265, and MF 7S.180. Wimpie Nel from OVK Bethlehem highlighted the exceptional features of each model.

Fendt 728 Vario Gen7: Full automation, outstanding fuel efficiency

The Fendt 728 Vario Gen7 is a 211 kW tractor equipped with DynamicPerformance technology, which delivers additional power when needed without increasing fuel consumption. The AGCO Power 7,5-litre six-cylinder engine uses Fendt iD’s low-speed concept, delivering maximum torque at just 1300 rpm and a fuel-efficient top speed at 1700 rpm.

Its VarioDrive transmission is an automatic all-wheel drive system that optimises the power balance between the front and rear axles depending on conditions. This allows seamless transitions between fieldwork (such as ploughing) and road transport without any action from the operator. It not only increases efficiency but also protects the drivetrain from unnecessary stress. With a minimum weight of just over 8 tons and the ability to pull up to 15 tons, the 728 Vario delivers a world-class power-to-weight ratio.

In independent tests, the model used on average 10 to 15% less fuel than competitors in the same power class.

Fendt 1162 Vario MT: Track power for the toughest jobs

This is the largest tractor in the Fendt range – a track tractor producing more than 500 kW, thanks to its MAN 16,2-litre engine. What makes it unique is the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), the only one of its kind among track tractors, allowing it to operate smoothly from 0 to 40 km/h.

The Fendt 1100 Vario MT series is purpose-built for high-power field applications such as heavy ploughs and rippers. Its SmartRide suspension and ConstantGrip track system ensure maximum ground pressure distribution, making it ideal for heavy-duty soil preparation with reduced compaction. Despite its size and power, fuel consumption is remarkably low thanks to the Fendt iD concept. At full load, this tractor can perform the same tasks as a larger wheeled tractor but at a lower fuel cost per hectare.

Massey Ferguson 8732 S: Power and simplicity in one package

The MF 8732 S is part of the Massey Ferguson 8700 S series, delivering 238 kW with a maximum torque of 1280 Nm. Its 8,4-litre AGCO Power engine meets Stage 2 emission standards, making it perfectly suited to the South African market without the need for complex exhaust systems.

The tractor features a Dyna-VT transmission, providing precise speed control in any condition. It also offers a high hydraulic capacity with a maximum flow of 205 litres per minute – ideal for large implements such as high-speed planters or spreaders.

Farmers value the reliability of the 8732 S, especially in regional conditions where rugged performance and low operating costs are essential. Wimpie expands: “Once I deliver it to a farmer, I hardly see him again – except when it’s time for a service. These tractors simply don’t break down.”

Massey Ferguson 8S.265: Innovative design, efficient engine

The MF 8S.265 runs a 7.4-litre AGCO Power engine producing 197 kW, with an EPM boost up to 212 kW when required. Its unique design separates the engine and cab by 24 cm, reducing heat and noise for the operator while extending component lifespan. This makes the tractor not only durable but also exceptionally comfortable for long days in the field.

It comes with the new Dyna E-Power transmission – a dual-clutch system that improves fuel efficiency and optimises power delivery. This gearbox reduces losses typically associated with conventional transmissions by up to 26%, while still offering the simplicity of a semi-automatic system. The MF 8S also has a highly adaptable hydraulic system, making it suitable for a wide range of implements. “It’s a modern, smart tractor that complements precision farming perfectly,” Wimpie adds.

Massey Ferguson 7S.180: The right balance for medium-sized farms

The MF 7S.180 delivers 135 kW, aimed at farmers seeking high performance in a smaller tractor model. Using the same AGCO Power engine series as the 8S, it can reach up to 150 kW with EPM support when needed.

With its compact build and relatively light weight, the 7S.180 is ideal for mixed farming and cash crop operations. It is easy to service and maintain – a key reason AGCO stands out in a competitive market.
