This year, Limagrain celebrates its 60th anniversary. This international seed company is well-known for its reliable seed cultivars that provide farmers across the world with a good harvest year after year.

In South Africa, Limagrain’s seeds are no exception, with their yellow and white maize cultivars thriving in the African sun.

To celebrate their 60th birthday and thank their loyal clients, Limagrain launched a competition this year. To enter the draw, you had to order and pay for more than 100 bags of seed before the end of May 2025. The winner walked away with a brand-new Metalian Genie camping trailer.

A winner from Bothaville

Piet Steenkamp, from the farm Hardusbult just outside Bothaville, was the lucky winner of this stunning trailer.

He says he bought seed from Limagrain earlier in the year, and Louis Pearson, the sales representative for the Bothaville area and surrounds, encouraged him to enter.

“I told him I never win anything and joked that if I did win the trailer, he could borrow it anytime. He told me he had a feeling the trailer was coming to Bothaville,” Piet shared.

Limagrain is a staple on the Steenkamp farm

Piet and his brother Frans farm on their family farm, which has been in the family since 1994. About seven years ago, they initially planted Limagrain trial crops on their farm, and after seeing the quality of the plants, they decided to start buying from Limagrain.

“We first planted trials, then saw there was something in those crops, and decided to plant more,” Piet says with a laugh.

They mainly plant Limagrain’s LG31.747 white maize cultivar and LG31.752 yellow maize cultivar on their farm.

Limagrain a staple in Bothaville

Louis covers the areas of Bothaville, Schweizer-Reneke, Vryburg, and Migdol for Limagrain and says that their LG31.747BR white maize cultivar performs very well for farmers in the Bothaville region.

“In my eyes, it’s a very stable cultivar that delivers good yields, year after year. It has been part of farm for about four years now,” he says.

This year, they also tested the LG31.753BR and LG31.755BR cultivars, and these two showpiece cultivars will soon be available to farmers as well.

Louis says it gives farmers peace of mind knowing that an international seed company like Limagrain has been in the market for 60 years.

“This isn’t a company that will just come and go. We are a well-established company in Africa that grows every year — Limagrain is here to stay,” he says proudly.

Winning this trailer was a big surprise for Piet and his brother, and the Steenkamp brothers say they’ll be heading to the fishing waters more often now.
