The origins of Nkorho Bush Lodge

The owners left their careers in Pretoria after the political changes of 1994. With limited knowledge of the hospitality industry, they accepted the challenge and moved to their new home in December 1996. By January 1997, they began building and developing the lodge into what it is today.

The lodge’s ownership and management by the owners themselves ensures that guests always receive personal attention. They are involved in all aspects of the lodge, from marketing to daily operations, creating a homely and family feel. This dedication has led to many guests returning time and time again, feeling that Nkorho is their second home.

Unforgettable experiences

Nkorho Bush Lodge offers a variety of activities to make guests’ stays unforgettable. Typical days start early with a game drive at 05:00, followed by a bush walk and breakfast. Lunch is served at 14:00, and the day concludes with an evening game drive and dinner at 20:00. In between, guests can relax by the pool or pamper themselves with a spa treatment. For those who want to keep fit, a gym is also available.

Accommodation and facilities

The lodge accommodates up to 16 guests in eight stylish, thatched-roof en-suite chalets that offer a homely atmosphere. Guests can enjoy a hearty breakfast under a thatched deck overlooking an open plain, and dinners are served around an open fire in a traditional boma. The swimmingpool provides refreshment during the hot African days.

The legendary Rommel and the lions

One of the most memorable stories from Nkorho Bush Lodge’s history is the story of Rommel, the brave staffie. Rommel was once attacked by a pride of lions, but miraculously survived and made a full recovery. What was incredible, however, was that he later decided to continue the fight. He took on the lions just outside the camp, and while an Echo training group was driving in the area, they tried to move between the dog and the lions. In the chaos, a student fell from the Jeep – right between the lions! In an attempt to seek safety, the student quickly climbed a tree, but no one noticed his fall, as everyone’s attention was on Rommel and the lions. When the situation finally calmed down and Rommel returned triumphantly to the lodge, they realised that the English student was still sitting up in the tree. It took three hours to get him out of the tree – a button thorn tree full of thorns and hooks! This story is one of many that captures the character and adventure of Nkorho Bush Lodge.

Future Vision

Although expansion is limited by the constitution/policy of the Sabi Sand Reserve, Nkorho is focused on maintaining an exclusive and quality experience for their guests. With a capacity of 16 guests and two game drive vehicles, the lodge remains small and intimate, ensuring that each guest has a unique and personal experience.
