During a recent visit to the production region of Viljoenskroon, ProAgri had the opportunity to speak with Limagrain agronomist Riaan van Lill and Fanie Yssel, Technical Manager for agronomy. Successful yield begins with pollination. Each ovule must be fertilised to form a kernel, making timing critical. LG31.755BR excels due to strong synchronisation between pollen shed and silk emergence, combined with additional pollen production from tillers, effectively extending the pollination period. This mechanism ensures more complete pollination, even under stress conditions such as heat or drought.

Productive tillering and increased ear potential
Unlike traditional hybrids, where tillers are often unproductive, LG31.755BR produces productive tillers:

  • Under stress (e.g. drought), it reallocates resources to protect the primary ear, with tillers acting as a reserve energy source

Riaan explains it in a practical way:
“The tillers function like a reserve tank. If the season shifts, the plant pulls resources back to fill the main ear. That’s where your security lies.”

Performance at lower plant populations
LG31.777BR also offers flexibility in planting strategy:

  • Performs well even at reduced plant densities
  • Compensates through additional ear formation

This results in:

  • Lower seed input costs
  • Improved drought tolerance
  • Greater management flexibility
