Feed mixers are one of the most important implements on any farm. Livestock need to be fed continuously, and how you get the feed to them is of critical importance. South African farmers have been doing this reliably for decades: they attach their feed mixer to a tractor and tow it to their livestock.

But any farmer who has ever struggled to disconnect everything during stormy weather, and then reconnect it again, understands that this is not always the most convenient solution. This is where Rumax comes in with its permanent feed mixer mounted on a truck.

This mounted feed mixer and truck combination attracted large numbers of visitors to the Rumax stand at NAMPO Cape this year. There, visitors were able to see an Iveco Eurocargo 150-240 truck with a Rumax 15 feed mixer mounted on the back.

Instead of having to deal with a tractor that first needs to disconnect another implement, or that is too large for certain roads, this machine offers a complete solution.

A new era for feed mixers

Jaco Pieters, owner and founder of Rumax, explained that the idea originated from an existing example used overseas. Feed mixers mounted on the back of trucks are common in countries such as the United States.

He explained that other feed mixer models are already being imported, but said this model is unique to South Africa. The entire system is installed on a truck and assembled at Rumax’s manufacturing facility in Worcester in the Western Cape.

Farmers who want this system or something similar can send their own truck to the manufacturing facility, where Rumax will install a feed mixer, spreader or any other system on the truck. Jaco emphasised that the process will not damage the vehicle’s gearbox, which is very important.

“The major advantage is that we have a pressure relief valve that protects your gearbox. We remove half of the gearbox and don’t use the planetary section. We then drive it hydraulically, which ensures that the gearbox is well protected.”

Feed mixers are important for farmers and their livestock

Whether you operate a dairy farm, feedlot or stud farm, every farmer knows that the health and value of their livestock depend on what they feed them. Rumax’s feed mixers ensure that your livestock feed is adequately balanced to support healthy and strong animals.

“The feed mixer ensures a balanced ration, so that the animal cannot pick and choose. It improves feed intake, reduces wastage and supports better animal health,” Jaco explained.
