Every farmer knows that a dam is one of the biggest assets on a farm. The purpose of an earth dam is to store water. This water is used to, inter alia, irrigate crops and supply drinking water to animals.
The challenge, however, is that a dam must be able to retain the water for as long as possible, especially during the dry season when it is not raining.
However, an earth dam can become the cause of many headaches especially if it leaks through the floor or embankment, or when unwelcome algae take over the dam.
This is where DamPro’s fantastic product range, DAMFIX, comes to the rescue!
The DAMFIX range has specifically been developed for earth dams that leak, have polluted water or algae. This range consists of three products, DAMFIX Wet, DAMFIX Dry and DAMFIX Bio.
The DamPro team was recently at Balfour Hooidag, where farmers from the Balfour and Delmas districts were impressed with their products.
- This is what DamFix Dry looks like. The mixture is incorporated into the soil to tightly seal the bottom of the pond.
DAMFIX Wet
DAMFIX Wet is used when there is water in the dam already, but there is a leak in the dam’s floor or embankment. With this product, there is no need to drain the dam before fixing the leak.
DAMFIX Wet is a polymer powder that can simply be sprinkled on the water surface. When the powder comes into contact with the water, it forms a gel layer that sinks to the bottom and binds with the soil to form a seal.
“The weight and pressure of the water forces this polymer into the soil so that it can bond with the soil and form the seal,” explains Belinda Labuschagne from DamPro.
The product is not toxic to animals that drink the water or fish and plants that live in the water. It is safe for use in irrigation systems and easy to apply. 20 litres of DAMFIX Wet cover a whopping 350 m² and expand up to 400 times.
DAMFIX Wet has no adverse effects on wildlife in and around the dam.
DAMFIX Dry
DAMFIX Dry is used in new dams or dams that are being repaired. The product is applied when the dam is empty. DAMFIX Dry is mixed into the soil and compacted before the water is added.
“The compaction of the soil is very important for this product. It ensures the durability of your pond,” says Belinda.
The formulation of DAMFIX Dry involves a combination of unique polymer and minerals that help the dam settle more quickly. It also helps the natural seal to form quicker. A dam usually takes one to two years to settle, but with DAMFIX Dry the settling period is significantly shortened to three to six months.
This product can also save you costs. Traditional waterproofing methods are much more expensive, but 20 litres of DAMFIX Dry covers 200 m² and expands up to 400 times.
The major advantage of this product is that the seal cannot be seen at all, which promotes the natural life in and around the pond.
- When DamFix Wet comes in contact with water it activates and forms a gel that sinks to the bottom of the dam and seals leaks.

DAMFIX Bio
The latest product in this range is DAMFIX Bio. This product is specifically used for algae control.
The product consists of a mixture of microbes that are “good” bacteria. These microbes are formulated to digest complex protein, fats, oil and cellulose. The DAMFIX Bio-mix is pre-prepared and the liquid can just be poured into your pond.
Although the product is recommended for dams, it can also be used for municipal greywater, septic tanks and many more. DAMFIX Bio can be used in earth dams, zinc dams and cement dams.
DAMFIX is a proudly South African product range manufactured in Kempton Park and available nationwide. The products are already mixed and ready to use. Application of each product is simple and can be an easy do-it-yourself project.
