Over the years, Buckridge Bonsmaras has built a solid reputation as a herd where purposeful selection and practical farming practices go hand in hand. Established in the challenging and dry Molopo region, Buckridge farms in conditions that require not only endurance but also top genetics that can truly perform when the environment becomes extremely demanding.

Under the leadership of owner Frans Seevinck, every breeding decision is made with a long-term vision: to breed Bonsmara cattle that are functionally efficient, fertile, hardy, and highly adaptable to South African farming environments.

Frans’ approach is simple yet powerful – breed only with the best, improve every generation, and deliver animals to the market that truly help farmers unlock value on their farms.

Farming Bonsmaras in the ‘Texas of Africa’

Bonsmara farming in the Molopo – a region known as the ‘Texas of Africa’ – places unique demands on any cattle breed. It is an area where heat, prolonged droughts, and limited rainfall form part of the challenges, and exactly the type of environmental pressure for which the Bonsmara breed was originally developed.

Prof. Jan Bonsma’s breeding philosophy, in which natural adaptability, hardiness, and survival ability under African conditions were placed first, is still clearly evident today in herds such as Buckridge’s. The Bonsmara’s ability to perform in diverse environments and consistently deliver good results makes it the ideal breed for farmers in the harsh Molopo climate. Here, the breed truly proves itself: animals that continue to grow, reproduce, and perform – even when nature does not cooperate.

The relationship between SYF Molopo and Buckridge

In 2020, Frans and Nico Pieterse of Syferfontein Bonsmaras joined forces to form a joint stud called SYF Molopo. The herd, built primarily on strong Syferfontein genetics, is managed in the challenging Molopo environment where Frans and Nico share responsibility for herd management, mating decisions, and selection. During the first five years, the focus was especially on transferring top embryos onto Buckridge’s commercial cows.

Last year, this foundation was strengthened further with the addition of selected SYF cows and genetics – a valuable boost that helps shape the future direction of the stud. This partnership is simple but powerful: Nico brings the genetics of Syferfontein’s herd, Frans provides the land and management, and together they build a herd that grows stronger each year.

At Buckridge’s upcoming production sale in February 2026, eight SYF Molopo bulls will also be on offer. Frans is very excited about these bulls.

Prospective buyers

For prospective buyers, it is important to know that the breeding philosophy of Buckridge and SYF Molopo is deeply rooted in the needs of the commercial farmer.

Frans says: “About 90% of our buyer base consists of commercial farmers in the region, and over the years a solid relationship of trust has been built through consistent quality and service. The feedback we receive from buyers about both our bulls and female animals is consistently extremely positive, with many farmers returning year after year for new genetics.”

In particular, the demand for Buckridge’s female animals is proof that their genetics truly add value in commercial farming operations, where fertility, hardiness, and adaptability are essential. The team firmly believes they are on the right track and continues to build purposefully on this foundation. Although the main goal is to serve commercial breeders’ needs, it is always a bonus when stud breeders also recognise the value and support their sale.

Support for upcoming breeders

Frans and the team at Buckridge see it as a priority to support emerging breeders in the region. They say that an increasing number of emerging farmers in the Vryburg district and the former Bophuthatswana area have started farming with Bonsmaras, encouraged by the breed’s excellent reputation and adaptability.

These farmers are often focused on quality and regularly supplement their herds with animals from Buckridge, especially female animals that form the base of their herds.

Frans is committed to assisting these emerging breeders, advising them on the correct genetics and quality animals, and helping them to expand their herds sustainably and profitably. This involvement not only reflects the team’s vision but also contributes to the sustainable growth of Bonsmara farming in the region.
