Year after year, Val Farmers Day is the place where farmers go to experience the latest agricultural technology up close, and this year the brand-new Massey Ferguson 9S 425 was undoubtedly one of the tractors that drew plenty of attention. It’s red, it’s striking, and it performs like a dream!
At the Massey Ferguson exhibit, Hennie van der Walt of JWL Landbou introduced farmers to this new flagship model, which has already been thoroughly tested under South African conditions over the past season and is now officially available on the local market.
According to Hennie, the 9S is far more than just a new model; it is a tractor refined in every aspect to improve productivity, operator comfort and profitability for farmers.
“These tractors have been tested in South Africa for quite some time, and we’re extremely excited about the success they’ve already achieved. Now they’re ready for the market,” he says.
Smart design for better performance
One of the first things that stands out is the distinctive design featuring a visible gap between the bonnet and the cab. Known as the Protect-U design, this is more than just a styling feature; it significantly enhances operator comfort by keeping heat, vibration and noise away from the cab. The result is a quieter, cooler and more comfortable working environment during long days in the field.
The cab itself is also noticeably larger than previous Massey Ferguson models. While Massey Ferguson cabs were traditionally known for being somewhat more compact, the 9S now offers considerably more space without sacrificing the familiar ergonomic layout.
The tractor is equipped with mechanical active cab suspension, QuadLink front axle suspension, automatic climate control and a premium air-suspended swivel seat featuring ventilation, heating and dynamic damping.
All controls are integrated into the ergonomic armrest with the familiar Multipad control, ensuring that every essential function is conveniently within reach.
- The spacious, comfortable cab offers excellent visibility, increased interior space and an ergonomic layout designed to make long working days easier.
- All essential functions are within easy reach thanks to the ergonomic Multipad control and the Datatronic 5 touchscreen, which integrates precision farming and tractor management.
Fuel savings that matter
With input costs continuing to rise, fuel consumption remains one of the biggest challenges for farmers. The 9S is powered by the reliable six-cylinder AGCO Power engine, paired with the 40 km/h Eco Dyna-VT continuously variable transmission (CVT). This combination allows the engine to operate at lower engine speeds while still delivering maximum torque.
According to Hennie, this results in outstanding fuel efficiency without compromising performance.
“Every opportunity a farmer has to save money makes a difference today.”
The large front weight mounted on the front three-point linkage also contributes to improved efficiency. It allows the tractor to be optimally ballasted, reducing wheel slip, improving traction and ultimately lowering fuel consumption even further.
Hydraulics ready for modern implements
“Another major improvement is the hydraulic system. While previous models came standard with lower oil flow capacities, the 9S can be equipped with a 340-litre-per-minute dual closed-centre Eco hydraulic system. This ensures that even the largest planters, tillage equipment and other high-demand implements have ample hydraulic capacity available,” Hennie adds.
The tractor also features separate hydraulic reservoirs for certain systems, helping to reduce the risk of oil contamination from implements while lowering maintenance costs. It comes standard with six electronically controlled hydraulic valves, all of which can be fully programmed according to the farmer’s specific requirements.
Precision farming as standard
The 9S has been designed for modern precision farming. Standard equipment includes the Datatronic 5 nine-inch touchscreen, which integrates tractor settings, ISOBUS control, camera displays and precision farming functions on a single platform. The tractor is delivered with the complete factory-installed precision farming package, with the required functionality already built in.
Features such as MF AutoTurn can be activated through software unlocking. MF Connect telematics, supplied with a five-year subscription as standard, enables farmers to remotely monitor the tractor’s performance, location and service requirements.
Additional technologies such as MF Guide, MF Section Control, MF Rate Control (variable-rate application), MF TaskDoc Pro, CTIS (Central Tyre Inflation System) and AGCO’s Next Farming Farm Management Information System are also available.

The six-cylinder AGCO Power engine, combined with the Eco Dyna-VT transmission, delivers outstanding fuel efficiency without compromising power.
Built for long days in the field
When the sun goes down, the work doesn’t have to stop. With up to 16 LED work lights, full 360-degree LED lighting, LED warning lights, a rear-view camera and electrically adjustable mirrors, the 9S provides outstanding visibility for night-time operations.
Additional features such as Bluetooth audio, an integrated microphone, multiple power outlets in the cab and a wide range of optional equipment make the tractor a comfortable workplace for long hours in the field.

Ready for South African farmers
The new Massey Ferguson 9S has clearly been designed with the modern farmer in mind. From enhanced operator comfort and lower fuel consumption to advanced precision farming technology and impressive hydraulic capacity, every improvement contributes to greater productivity on the farm.
The strong interest the tractor attracted at Val Farmers Day demonstrates that South African farmers are continually looking for equipment that is not only powerful but also works smarter. The Massey Ferguson 9S delivers on both counts and is ready to make its mark on farms across the country.
