“If you have trucks that are struggling to get to the fields when it is as wet as it has been this year, they work incredibly well to give you a gap to arrange trucks all at once or to be able to harvest while you are waiting for trucks,” says Willem Loots, co-owner and director of RSA Grain Storage Solutions.

RSA Grain Storage Solutions builds these zinc grain dams themselves, making them more affordable.

Zinc Grain Dams

Willem says zinc grain dams are usually next on a farmer’s list. These dams offer farmers more permanent storage space. Although not all farmers can immediately erect silos on their farms, zinc grain dams offer a very good solution until the situation changes.

“We at RSA have started developing zinc grain dams and everything is built in South Africa in our factory. Because nothing has to be imported, the price of these grain dams is also more affordable. You get the functionality of a silo, but at a price that is a nice middle ground between your grain dams and where you move to silos,” explains Willem.

RSA Grain Storage Solutions builds these dams up to 300 tons and has systems to incorporate the dams so that farmers can fill several of these dams with the same equipment.

“It’s always great when farmers request this system because we can tailor it for the application on the farm itself, and we’ve already installed quite a few of these dams all the way up to Uganda,” says Willem.

He adds that the dams are excellent for the African market because they don’t have many electronic components, and on top of that, they are robust, require little maintenance and are extremely durable.

Next on the list: silos

RSA Grain Storage Solutions has joined forces with AGI, a European silo manufacturer. RSA and AGI have already erected silos of hundreds of thousands of tonnes in South Africa in the past few years.

“It’s a product that we know works, that we have parts available for and because the after-sales service is excellent, it’s a pleasure to work with AGI’s products. Our local technicians already know how to work on their products should something come up,” says Willem.

One of the great advantages of having your own silo is the fact that you have excellent control over your grain. You decide where you want to sell and to whom you will deliver. When the market price is a little lower than expected, for example, you can hold back your grain for a while so that you can decide when you will deliver as conditions improve.

Grain bunkers

This year, RSA Grain Storage Solutions also set up a grain bunker for farmers at NAMPO. This is a platform that has been used by cooperatives for years for large-scale grain storage.

“You’re looking at sizes of 1 000 to 2 000 tonnes and larger, but because the equipment that usually goes with it is a bit more expensive, it’s just aimed at higher capacities. It’s also a platform that’s becoming more common on farmers’ farms. What’s nice is that a lot of the farmers are using an incorporating system where they already have silos and then just add a bunker,” explains Willem. “You keep the functionality of your silos with your cleaners and your handling equipment, but you also get the benefit of large-capacity storage space.”

The bunkers also work great when you have more than one type of grain with a fairly large amount coming through. These bunkers are suitable for large industrial clients, mills and cooperatives that store enormous quantities of grain.

Water dams

RSA Grain Storage Solutions not only specialises in grain storage, but can also help with water storage on your farm.

The company rolls and bends the dams themselves, so they can provide the exact sizes and measurements required.

RSA Grain Solutions also focuses specifically on industrial dams and feed dams for farms, and has built dams for firefighting for several forestry clients.

Farmers can comfortably feed between 500 and 1 000 lambs with RSA Grain Storage’s automatic sheep feeding systems.

Automated sheep feeding systems

RSA Grain Storage Solutions developed their automated sheep feeding systems in collaboration with their customers. As the company already works with grain handling and raw material handling, the range was a natural fit.

“We saw a natural way to transport pellets, meal or raw feed with the flex auger lines,” explains Willem.

They manufacture systems that are 25 m and 50 m in size and can usually feed about 500 to 1 000 lambs at a time.

According to Willem, the system makes it much easier to feed a large number of sheep if less labour is available, especially on weekends.
