This year at NAMPO Cape, the company caught up with numerous farmers to chat about different cultivars, the impact of South Africa’s climate, and exactly what it takes to farm successfully in a country with its many agricultural challenges.

Eugene Muller, Director and Manager of Limagrain South Africa, explains: “Our focus is on maize, soya, sunflower, and wheat, with lucerne and ryegrass forming part of our pasture offering. Our goal is simple: to get the right genetics to the right farmer and farm, adapted to his specific area and conditions, so that he can farm successfully.”

The top picks in the Cape

The Cape climate is unique and brings new challenges, which is why Limagrain regularly introduces new crops. However, certain crops in the company’s range remain firm favourites, including wheat, lucerne, ryegrass and oats.

Stephan de Wet, Limagrain Sales Representative, explains that some crops perform better in the Cape than others.

“Our wheat cultivars are performing exceptionally well now, especially LG Ancia, a short-season variety that matures early. We’re also very excited about LG Albatros, which is a bit faster still. Next year, we’re adding LG Fisant to the lineup, a slightly longer grower in growth class 7.”

Limagrain is constantly developing new seed packages for the South African market. At the company’s stand, there was plenty of discussion about what Limagrain is doing to ensure every seed package is tailored for specific farms.

Riaan van Lill, a Limagrain agronomist, stresses: “The journey a Limagrain agronomist walks with the farmer starts on day one. It runs from the delivery of the seed right through to harvest time, almost into the combine harvester itself. We support the farmer through the entire process.”

He adds that many South African farmers have already contributed to Limagrain’s strong reputation in the market. The varied conditions local farmers face inspire Limagrain’s development of new and improved cultivars.

“Our South African farmers have made a huge contribution to Limagrain’s name and success, and we’d like to thank them sincerely for that,” says Riaan. “They’ve been willing to plant our products and run trials on their farms so that we can pinpoint what works best for every farm, soil type, microclimate and region.”
