Farming in South Africa is not for the faint-hearted. It demands perseverance, knowledge, and the right tools to turn unpredictable weather, rising input costs, and diverse soil types into a profitable harvest. That is why farmers are always on the lookout for products that not only offer more certainty but also provide a better return on investment. One of the newest products being introduced at farm level this season is Kynoplus Pro®, a brand-new urease inhibitor from Kynoch Fertiliser.

Kynoplus Pro® will be officially launched at NAMPO 2025 and will replace the current Kynoplus®, offering enhanced protection against nitrogen losses and even greater yield potential for farmers. This is not simply a new label. It represents a significant leap forward, built on years of research and the trust farmers have placed in the company for decades.

Kynoch has been part of the agricultural foundation of South Africa since 1919. What began as a supplier of fertiliser and explosives has evolved into a modern, sustainable agricultural partner specialising in precision plant nutrition and farmer support. Today, Kynoch is known for much more than quality fertiliser. They also offer technical expertise and customised solutions that truly support farm operations.

What makes Kynoch’s approach unique is that they understand every farm is different. Whether you are planting maize in Mpumalanga or wheat in the Western Cape, Kynoch’s team of agronomists works alongside you to develop strategies that support your soil, your crop, and your production goals.

If you have ever worked with urea-based fertilisers, you know that nitrogen losses through volatilisation can silently cause major losses. When urea is applied, soil enzymatic activity (especially urease) begins breaking it down. This process can cause nitrogen to be lost as ammonia gas into the atmosphere, especially under conditions such as high temperatures, high pH soils, or surface applications without rainfall.

Research shows that up to 50% of applied nitrogen can be lost under unfavourable conditions. That is literally money evaporating and yield potential that never materialises.

There are ways to reduce this risk, such as incorporating fertiliser into the soil, applying it just before rainfall, or optimising your application rates. But even with good practices, losses still occur. That is where urease inhibitors play a vital role.

Kynoplus Pro® is available from May 2025.

What makes Kynoplus Pro® different?

Kynoplus Pro® is not merely a tweak of an existing formula. It is a next-generation urease inhibitor, containing two active ingredients:

NBPT (N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide), a well-known compound, and a newer component, Duromide. Kynoplus Pro® is powered by Anvol which has two active ingredients, namely NBPT and Duramide.

These two work together to offer more sustainable and reliable protection against nitrogen losses, even under variable field conditions where things are rarely ideal.

“NBPT has always worked well, but the addition of Duromide takes it to the next level,” explains Dr Chris Schmidt, Chief Agronomist at Kynoch. “This combination gives producers a longer protection window, better stability in fertiliser blends, and greater peace of mind.”

The formula is also more stable in complex blends, especially those containing MAP (monoammonium phosphate) and AS (ammonium sulphate) — both of which are commonly used in South African programmes. This means you get consistent, reliable performance, whether you use Kynoplus Pro® as a standalone nitrogen source or as part of a blend.

Hentie Cilliers and Dr Chris Schmidt, Agronomists at Kynoch, are the experts on the brand-new Kynoplus Pro®, to be launched during NAMPO 2025. This product sets a new industry standard for preventing nitrogen loss through volatilisation.

More of your nitrogen remains in the soil where your plants can absorb it — rather than being lost. You get better nitrogen use efficiency, stronger plant growth, and ultimately higher yields. The numbers make sense. According to Kynoch’s field trials, a maize farmer only needs to harvest an additional 30 to 40 kg of grain per hectare to cover the cost of Kynoplus Pro®. After that, it is all profit. For every R1 invested, trials show a yield return of between R10 and R80, depending on your environment and management practices.

Kynoplus Pro® forms part of Kynoch’s broader strategy to offer Enhanced Efficiency Fertilisers (EEF) products that work smarter, not just harder. This approach improves nutrient use efficiency and minimises losses.

Kynoch offers more than just fertiliser to their customers. Their team supports farmers with on-farm advice, backed by trial data, satellite imaging technology, and digital tools that help adjust nutrition strategies as conditions change.

Kynoch is a proven name in the industry, and their products are developed with local research tailored to South African soils and crops.

As pressure increases on input costs, environmental sustainability, and yield performance, products like Kynoplus Pro® are no longer a luxury. They are a necessity. They help farmers do more with less, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of South African agriculture.

Kynoplus Pro® will be available from May 2025. It is an investment in your soil, your crop, and your peace of mind. For more information, or to speak to a Kynoch agronomist about how Kynoplus Pro® fits into your fertilisation programme, visit www.kynoch.co.za.
