Ig Ferreira, Regional Director of Yara in South Africa, has retired after 42 years in the industry. The dynamic leader says, “agriculture is in my genes”. He emphasises the value of relationships, whether with customers, colleagues, the industry, or agricultural organisations.
Ferreira also says the passion, integrity, and perseverance of South African farmers are “remarkable and unparalleled”. However, he is modest about the exceptional role he has played at Yara over the decades.
“I don’t necessarily see myself as a leader, but rather as a servant who clears the stones from the road so that the people who know more than I do can achieve their agreed-upon goals.”
Wikus Grové, previously the Financial Director of Yara’s entire Africa division, took over the reins from Ferreira. “I am very excited that he is my successor,” says Ferreira.
By linking Ferreira’s legacy of integrity, adaptability, and emphasis on relationships with Grové’s industry knowledge, a new chapter begins for Yara Africa Fertilizer, one in which the foundations are strong and the outlook for renewal and continued growth remains exciting.
Grové has more than 10 years of leadership experience in finance, strategy, and transformation within the agricultural industry across the African continent. His career at Yara reflects strategic insight, adaptability, and a deep understanding of both the challenges and the potential of agriculture in Africa, and he brings expertise and experience to the role.
“South Africa finds itself at a pivotal point in agricultural history.”
Under his leadership, new models were implemented that strengthened Yara’s resilience and performance, aligning the company’s operations with Yara Africa’s long-term strategies.
His work laid the foundation for greater efficiency, innovation, and sustainable growth. Grové has also managed several important mergers and acquisition projects across the continent, further expanding and integrating Yara’s presence in the region.
His balanced leadership style, which combines financial discipline with strategic foresight, has helped Yara navigate challenging market conditions and emerge even stronger. Yara Africa believes that Grové’s leadership will help the company enter a new era of growth and impact, in line with its regional and global objectives.

Wikus Grové, Yara’s new Managing Director for South Africa.
A new phase for Yara Africa Fertilizer
In his new capacity as Managing Director, Grové will be responsible for all Yara Africa Fertilizer operations, with a focus on business growth, operational efficiency, and the consolidation of existing plants. He will build on Yara’s mission to promote sustainable regenerative agriculture in South Africa and the rest of the region.
“South Africa finds itself at a critical point in agricultural history,” says Grové. “At Yara South Africa, we focus on offering balanced crop nutrition solutions, optimising our operations, and forming strategic partnerships that broaden access to inputs, as well as agricultural technology and markets.
“By combining expertise, innovation, and collaboration, we can empower producers, improve production, strengthen value chains, and drive profitability and sustainable growth over the long term.”
“We don’t just want to be part of the conversation about sustainable agriculture – we want to lead the conversation.”
