Dunevax Biotech confirms the arrival of 2 million doses of the SAT1, SAT2 and SAT3 Pirbright-matched Dollvet-Oil Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccine at OR Tambo International Airport, with cargo received through DSV’s temperature-controlled logistics facilities.

This shipment forms part of a broader 6 million-dose supply, supporting South Africa’s ongoing response to Foot-and-Mouth Disease, which continues to impact multiple provinces and remains a critical concern for the livestock industry.
The arrival of this additional vaccine supply represents a continued, coordinated effort to strengthen national biosecurity and support the protection of livestock, farmers, and the agricultural economy.

Strengthening the National response

South Africa continues to manage outbreaks of FMD across several regions, with containment efforts focused on movement control, surveillance, and targeted vaccination strategies under the direction of the Department of Agriculture and state veterinary authorities.

The availability of additional vaccine doses supports these efforts by enabling targeted interventions in high-risk and affected areas, contributing to the broader objective of limiting the spread of the disease.

Vaccine profile and manufacturing standards

The Dollvet-Oil FMD vaccine is an inactivated, oil-adjuvanted trivalent vaccine designed to protect livestock against the three Foot-and-Mouth Disease serotypes currently circulating in Southern Africa:

  • SAT1
  • SAT2
  • SAT3

The vaccine is Pirbright-matched to regional strains and formulated using a modern water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) double emulsion, designed to enhance and prolong immune response under field conditions.
The vaccine is manufactured by Dollvet, a GMP-compliant biotechnology facility in Turkey, with advanced production infrastructure and internationally recognised quality standards for veterinary vaccine development.

Supporting surveillance and transparency

As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen pharmaceutical oversight and field monitoring, the deployment of vaccines is supported by the Dunevax Vaccination Surveillance App, powered by Buffalo Analytics.
The platform incorporates QR-code traceability, enabling:

  • Tracking of vaccine batches
  • Monitoring of administration
  • Enhanced post-vaccination surveillance (PVM)
  • Improved transparency and data availability for stakeholders
This capability supports more informed decision-making and contributes to strengthening national disease control systems.

Continued collabaration
The arrival of this shipment reflects continued collaboration between government, regulators, veterinary authorities, and industry partners, all working toward a shared goal of containing Foot-and-Mouth Disease and protecting South Africa’s livestock sector.
Dunevax, in partnership with Dollvet, remains committed to supporting this effort through the responsible supply of high-quality vaccines, aligned with the country’s epidemiological requirements.

Further shipments from the remaining 6 million-dose allocation are expected to follow soon as part of the
phased national strategy.
