Farm violence and theft in South Africa

According to the South African police, farm violence is defined as any violence against a person living in a rural area. According to the SAP’s most recent crime figures, spanning from October 2024 to December 2024, there were 96 farm murders, 91 incidents of attempted murder and 432 incidents of assault with intent to cause serious injury. There were also 98 incidents of rape reported in rural areas during the period.

Livestock poaching is also a very big problem and in the same period 6 965 cases of livestock theft were reported. The theft of sheep is at the top of the list, followed by goats, cattle and poultry.

In this period 71 cases of rhino poaching and four of elephant poaching were also reported.

Although these are the figures reported by the SAPD, there are other institutions that believe that the real numbers are much higher.
